The first #scichat speed geeking session will be at 9:00 PM (Eastern) on 9/21/2010.
The community has spoken! Starting on 09/14/2010, #scichat is moving to every Tuesday at 9:00 PM Eastern. We will alternate weeks between focused topic discussions and speed geeking. Speed geeking simply gives us the time and space to brainstorm ideas and share resources.
For example, a “speed geeking” session could (loosely) revolve around the theme of online simulations. Participants would tweet their favorites and examples of how the simulations can be used. Of course, conversations could branch off in many directions, but the focus would be on generating a large list of quality resources. We won’t vote for these, but instead just go with the flow.
The SciDo Collaborative
The goal of the SciDo Collaborative is to turn our #scichat discussions in to action. Join. Learn. Do. Share. http://scido.wikispaces.com/
The #scichat Challenge
#scichat challenges are yet another way to turn our #scichat discussions in to action. Have fun by completing the challenge with others! Details for the first #scichat challenge (ends October 22, 2010) are available here.
Overview
If you have ever been to an education conference, you will probably agree that a lot of the best learning comes from the discussions between sessions, dinner, or at other “unscripted” times when you have the opportunity to share with other passionate professionals. We need these types of interactions to keep moving our craft forward.
#scichat provides a way for scientists and educators to engage in an ongoing discussion with the goal of sharing ideas, growing professionally and improving the teaching of science. This “hashtag” can be used at any time to share your thoughts or resources with other science educators. However, the real power of #scichat is to develop a community through real-time events every other Tuesday night (9:00 Eastern). The topic for each event will usually be selected in advance by the community. We will also occasionally have #scichat special events and Twinterviews.
Although #scichat is “moderated” by Eric Brunsell and Jeff Goldstein, it is very much a participant driven community!

Two topic ideas
-communication in science. How can we prepare our students to not only think like scientists but to read and communicate like scientists?
-ideal 21st century science classroom. What does it look like? How do we get there?

Wow, what a great lineup of topics! Can we do them all?

Thanks for the comment - I hope we can get through all of them over the next few weeks — it depends on which ones the community votes for!

Hi Eric,
First time at #scichat - is it on Twitter, Elluminate or Skype? How do I access the chat? Is it Eastern US time or Eastern Standard Time (I’m from Australia)? Sorry for the niave questions.

Hi Eric,
I can’t seem to vote here. Maybe I am too late, since it’s already July 6th? Oh well- looking forward to the scichat tonight. All the topics sound good.

Britt-
#scichat is on Twitter. You do need a Twitter account to participate. If you are new to Twitter, the easiest way to participate is to use the Twitter website and have two different windows open. One should have the search for #scichat and the second should show all of the @replies to you. That way, you can skim the conversation and also make sure that you catch anything directed to you.
It is at 9:00 PM US Eastern (GMT-4)

Nancy,
The vote for today’s #scichat ended early this morning. The poll generally opens after #scichat ends and closes the morning of the next one.

Thanks for the link - I’ll be there at 11am Wednesday, Melbourne time. I have used twitter and set up #scichat in Tweetdeck, so I hope I will be able to actively particpate. We are on school holidays at the moment, otherwise, I’d be in class!
I teach Year 6/7/8 science and VCE Biology, so I am very intersted in addressing the range of diversity in classrooms.

Hey Eric, a few more possible topics for #scichat (open or structured):
-Using cell phones in the science classroom
-K-12 and university relationships (okay, that one was yours but I’m really interested)
-Parental involvement in the science classroom
-Homework
-How to reach real audiences for student projects
-Effective guest speakers (how to contact them, how to prep and structure their visit, follow ups, etc.)
